The Salvation Army Citadel is a renowned building located at the eastern end of Castle Street or Castlegate, in Aberdeen. It stands out among the area’s constructions for its castle-like shape, with turrets, stained glass, and a striking arch-shaped entrance.
The Salvation Army Citadel was built by order of General William Booth, founder of The Salvation Army. It was erected between 1893 and 1896 on the site of the old Aberdeen Castle.
The four-story, large-scale building is made of granite. It displays a distinct Scottish baronial style and a dominant bartizan tower. It is considered the finest work of London architect James Souttar, who also designed the Carmelite Hotel.
A Church in the City Center
The original complex included a worship hall in the center, ground-level shops, and residential apartments. Some floors were exclusively used by The Salvation Army staff, who had direct access to the hall. Other spaces were used for scouts, cubs, boys brigade, and music teaching.
Later, The Salvation Army sold the building’s wings, including the Tower Block, which today has been converted into residential units. The main construction remained, although with some changes. A new entrance to the facilities was created, and elevators connecting the four levels were installed. There were also internal and external renovations.
During the rehabilitation works of The Salvation Army Citadel, a wall dating back to approximately 1661 was discovered. It could have belonged to a building from the late medieval or early post-medieval period, according to its engraving. It was left in situ, and the existence of other archaeological treasures was not ruled out due to the area’s antiquity.
The current citadel features a worship hall created on the upper level, where Sunday religious services are held. It is also open to the general public on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays in the morning. It is a church in the city center, offering both practical and spiritual ministry.
